Al Gury: Educator
Al Gury has been sharing his passion for art with students for nearly 40 years.
The moment Al finished his formal studies as a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), he began to give back as a teacher, bringing to the classroom the same passion that he invests in his art. He is currently a full professor at PAFA and Chairman of the Painting Department.
The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
Founded in 1805, PAFA is the oldest art museum and art school in the United States. PAFA attracts some of the world's most promising art students to study painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and illustration with a distinguished faculty of working artists.
Al has also instructed students at Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Delaware, Cabrini College, St. Joseph's University, and the University of the Arts.
Today Al can also be found lecturing at the Barnes Foundation, the Samuel Fleisher Art Memorial (administered by the Philadelphia Museum of Art), and—through the city's Mural Arts project—to anyone in Philadelphia with a passion for art.
He is particularly proud of PAFA's After School Arts Program, which he created in 1994. Each year the After School Arts Program introduces hundreds of students from 60 Philadelphia High Schools and organizations to painting, drawing, and sculpture.
Al conducts workshops nationwide, serves as a juror for Plein Air competitions, and has worked as a guest curator for dozens of exhibitions.
